Whales that shoot items out their spouts. Pigs that shoot explosive pigs from their behinds. Eets is full of items that, well, don’t really make much sense at all. This is especially true with the Ginseng Factory. Eets players have been wondering about this oddball item for some time now, and now’s as good a time as any to explain the origins of the Ginseng Factory!

Ginseng: Weird. Ginseng with arm cannon firing radioactive flying ginseng: Even weirder.

Truthfully, I wasn’t even around when the crazy idea of the Ginseng Factory was conceived. So in order to discover the origins of this item, I asked Bigfoot, who’s been around Eets since the beginning of time (maybe not that long, but long enough!)

The Ginseng Factory

“It all started during an item brainstorming session for the in-development demo version of Eets. While coming up with item ideas, the first focus was on functionality, i.e. what type of things would happen with the items in Eets World. After having an idea of what function an item would have, we’d then figure out what that item would look like. For example, ideas such as shooting items upwards, or triggering an item to cause an explosion would eventually evolve into the Prankster Whale and Sneezy Sow. Having already thought about the day/night dynamic in Eets beforehand, we needed an item that could turn lightbulbs on and off. This item would act like the laser beam in The Incredible Machine, where you’d activate it to shoot a laser beam that would eventually activate a lightbulb. However, we wanted something that looked completely different and, in fitting the Eets theme, quirky.”

“So we just thought up of weird animals and things; basically whatever came out of our heads that day, like porcupines and dragons. That same day, my then-girlfriend (now fianceĆ©! :) ) made me some ginseng chicken soup. As I was eating this soup and everyone else was throwing out ideas like eyeballs and kitchen sinks, I spontaneously proclaimed,

We’ll make it shoot ginseng!

“Everybody in that room that day gave me blank stares.”

“However upon that proclaimation, my friend had the seeds of inspiration planted within himself. As if possessed by the ginseng gods themselves, he quickly scribbled upon a piece of paper what this ginseng capable of lighting up light bulbs would look like.”

Concept art of the Ginseng Factory. Not the original drawn on scrap paper, but nice nevertheless!

Everybody in that room that day burst out into laughter.

“The idea was so funny that it had to be used, and that day the Ginseng Factory was born.”

Radioactive Flying Ginseng

Once the idea of the Ginseng Factory came about, some questions arose. How does a Ginseng Factory shoot? What does it shoot? Perhaps inspired by endless hours of Metroid and Megaman (Rockman for those in Japan ;) ), the Ginseng Factory would be given an arm cannon where it could shoot (manufacture?) endless mini-ginseng. Although cool, another question related to the original dilemna arose: How can ginseng light up lightbulbs?

Bigfoot, further inspired by Invader Zim at the time, saw a correlation between radioactive rubber pants and ginseng. This allowed the ginseng shot by the Ginseng Factory to become radioactive, which can partially explain why radioactive ginseng are capable of turning on light bulbs.

A little Radioactive Flying Ginseng searching for its destination.

That’s how the Ginseng Factory and Flying Ginseng came to life as regulars in Eets world. So remember, next time you have ginseng chicken soup, think of the radioactive flying variety!

  1. I love creation stories. It’s great when things just seem to work out too. I’ve never really had ginseng chicken soup (hell I can’t even remember what ginsend tastes like…), but I guess I’ll have to find a recipe… ;)

  2. Ginseng Chicken Soup is probably my favourite soup of all time. Light, healthy, and very tasty ;)

Coming up with ideas is definitely the fun part. The hard part is all the iterations it takes to make the animations look great and the “feel” of the item natural. We’ve learnt a lot along the way!

  4. Actually, I haven’t tried cheesy ramen yet… but I will one day! And it’ll be on CheesyRamen’s bill ;)
